The best budgeting app in Portugal
depends on you.

We compared six ways to manage your money on what matters when you live in Portugal, whether you were born here or just moved: how transactions get in from your banks, what it costs, which currencies it handles and whether it deals with investments and Portuguese taxes. This guide is by the Moneydy team, so Moneydy is on the list. For each option we say who it suits best, even when that isn't us.

What matters in Portugal.

Three questions set these apps apart more than any pretty chart.

  • How transactions get in Some apps connect to your bank and fetch transactions on their own; others import the statement you export, or ask you to type them. Connecting is easier; importing gives nobody access to your bank.
  • Investments and taxes If you hold stocks, ETFs or crypto at a foreign broker, Portuguese tax residents report the gains in annex J of the IRS return, usually at 28%. Few apps track investments, and fewer still prepare the return.
  • Price and currencies Free plans with limits, subscriptions in dollars, or nothing to pay. And if you earn or save in dollars or reais, you want the app to add it all up in euros.

Six options, side by side.

Your bank's app

If you have one account

You already have it, and it sorts spending by category. It stops being enough once you add a second bank, a card elsewhere or investments.

Frequently asked questions.

What is the best budgeting app in Portugal?

It depends on what you need. For a strict budgeting method, YNAB. For many currencies, Toshl. For automatic bank connections in a native app, Wallet. If you also invest in stocks or crypto and file taxes in Portugal, Moneydy, which is ours.

Do any apps connect to Portuguese banks?

Yes. YNAB and Toshl Medici list Portugal among the countries with bank connections, and Wallet advertises over 15,000 banks worldwide on Premium. Check in the app that your bank is listed before you pay. Moneydy doesn't connect to banks: it imports the statement you export from yours.

Is it safe to give an app access to my bank?

In the European Union, banks must offer an official connection for this: you sign in on your bank's own site and the app receives your transactions without keeping your password. Where a bank doesn't offer it, some apps use partners that log in with your credentials. If you would rather give no access at all, importing your statement is the alternative.

Is there a free budgeting app?

Yes. Moneydy, Toshl and Wallet have free plans with limits, and your bank's app and a spreadsheet cost nothing. YNAB has no free plan, only a 34-day trial.

I moved to Portugal. Which app helps with Portuguese taxes on investments?

Of the apps in this guide, only Moneydy matches every stock and crypto sale to its purchases, first in first out, and sorts the result by annex G, G1 and J of the IRS return. For a single sale, our gains calculator is free and needs no sign-up; it is in Portuguese.
